PELICANS EYE VIEW
Pelicans use a phenomenon called the “ground effect” which helps them fly further without flapping their wings. When they glide super close to the water, the air between their wings and the surface gets funneled and compressed, which increases lift and reduces drag. It’s incredible to watch them drop in on a wave, harnessing this ground effect. Then right before the wave closes out, they use that speed to turn straight up into the air, and glide down to connect the next section of waves. Over and over and over again!

LET'S CROC & ROLL!
To access our launch point, we had to launch the jet skis and support boat way up at the headwaters of a river (which shall not be named 😎) and navigate a labyrinth of channels and narrow passageways lined by some of the thickest mangrove forests imaginable. This adventure covered some serious mileage, and stretched through the afternoon and into the dark of night. It took some significant faith in our guides to trust they knew where they were going.

CROCS!
THICK MANGROVES
Another fun fact, that came to my attention after spending hours on said river - in complete darkness… was that it’s chock-full of crocodiles! Needless to say, I was counting my lucky stars (again) that we made it through those waters unscathed🐊 We spent three days foiling our faces off, and on the return trip… in the daylight… we saw tons of crocodiles!

CURIOUS CREATURES
Except for the tiny village, the fishing boats in the bay, and the few surf hotels on the beach, there’s very little else for miles in any direction. What there is an abundance of however, is sea life. There are so many sea lions and birds of all kinds. The sea lions are an inquisitive bunch, they often come pretty close while you’re in the water, and stick their heads up to check you out. Then dive off to swim in the waves or find a nice rock to climb up on.

FOILING ON MARS
Home to one of the longest left point breaks in the world… none other than the infamous Chicama! I’ve been fortunate to go on a couple of foil surfing missions to this hallowed spot, and it’s nothing short of pure magic. Some of the rides I’ve had here were over 5 minutes… and can be far longer if the conditions align perfectly! It’s the kind of wave where your legs turn to jello halfway through, but it’s just way too fun to stop! The scenery in Chicama is completely surreal. It’s what I would imagine foiling on Mars would be like 👽

"LANCE'S
LEFT"
GLASSY MORNINGS
On my ocean foiling journey, I’ve been fortunate to ride some phenomenal waves. One of which is known as “Lance’s Left” - Coined by none other than Captain Lance Moss, a true OG and legend in the Nica surfing scene. I feel super lucky to have met Lance, James, and their cohorts - who have taught me so much about foiling in the ocean, in such a relatively short amount of time.
